The
Emergency Services Homeless Coalition, in partnership with the
Chartrand Foundation, JCCI, the Community Foundation Jacksonville, and
the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida, coordinated "Conversations for Education" during the fall of 2012.
What were "Conversations for Education"?
"Conversations
for Education" were a six-part series of community conversations focusing on the barriers homeless students face. The purpose was to bring people together to identify the needs of homeless students, and find ways to ensure that they have the same opportunities as their peers.
Why are "Conversations for Education" Important?
Local statics show that there is at least one homeless student in every Duval County Public School. The "Conversations for Education" provided an opportunity to have open, purposeful dialogue about the barriers homeless students and their families face. If a citizen learns that a child is homeless, would they know the laws that protect homeless students? Would they know how to seek help or be able to access the resources that are available locally? These discussions are vital, because they enable stakeholders to understand how our city is impacted when children are in crisis, and how everyone can be a part of their success. Each of us has the power to help homeless students thrive.
